REMITTANCES: ECONOMIC FUEL

Remittances Receipt

Over $12B annual remittances of the OFW came from these remittances receipt even though they do not pay taxes to the Philippine Government.

During paycheck time, OFW's flock to every remittance center here in KSA. Each one will have to withstand the long lines to be able to send money to their families back home. Sometimes, the money is still smoking hot, fresh from the cash machines or from their company payroll, straight to desired remittance booth. Money left will be for his daily household allowance and for some amusement expenses.

This figure of remittances will keep on rising because of the continuous influx of second generation OFW’s now joining the OFW bandwagon. No wonder the economic experts baptized them, as the new heroes of the 21 st century. It is really hard to ignore that they are now becoming the primary fuel to drive the Philippine economic growth. According to the owner of a prime developer of real state company quoted as saying, if it so happen that there will be a decline for the demand of OFW’s working abroad. He said; he will immediately put on hold or completely stop all his real state projects to prevent possible losses.

A typical town in the countryside with a demographics composed mainly of OFW beneficiaries will surely make a dent to the local businesses if these remittances will not reached the recipient in due time. Just imagine the scenario if the banks did not receive the money from the OFWs:

Construction stopped because the developers do not get paid.

Increase of expired grocery food inventory because of low sales.

Students will not take exams because of non paying of tuition fees

Deferred payment of loans.

No more take out pizzas or burgers.

Postpone parties and out of town picnics.

Barbers will play more chess games than cutting hair.

Tricycle drivers will spend more time in the waiting shed rather than on the road.

The yaya will not get paid.

No more tip for the waiters/waitresses in the restaurant.

Grumpy lenders will keep knocking on the door.

Internet service connection will be interrupted.

Cellphones will just be use as a calculator, alarm clock, radio and camera.

Dogs wont stop barking, asking for more meat bones in their left over foods.

Have you seen the point here? It is just One Word… It is the Economy people!

So, why is it that there was a fervent move to tax the OFW’s by certain individuals( mostly politicians)? Because of the number… man! To date, OFWs around the world totalled to around 8 million and counting. More than 1 million of which is from Saudi Arabia alone. If you only collect $ 1 per person, that is a staggering $8M every single month to the government coffer.

There are a lot of debates surrounding this issue. But one thing for sure, if you ask me or most of the OFW’s out there, the definite answer would be a resounding big NO!!. Knowing that the government will cut the portion of my hard earned paycheck is not anymore appealing and will surely demotivates the majority already working away from their family.

I am more than happy to pay for my real state tax, value added tax, professional tax, insurance tax, business tax, but please… not anymore to the fixed withholding tax deducted to my paycheck. I’ve been there and done that already. I do not remember smiling when I line up to pay for my withholding tax long time ago to the BIR. Why? My wife was not smiling to my paycheck either. Leave that to those still happy working in the Philippines who might be someday by a sudden course of nature decided to also work overseas.

For now, I’ve got big smile in line paying for my remittances because I know I make a difference in the economy as a whole and at the same time, also making my wife happy with a big smile going to the Bank. : -))

THE BOX OF LOVE

Box of Love

Have you seen similar box like this before? This is no ordinary box. There's something about this box that is deeper than we knew the contents are. It stands as one of the many symbols of the OFW phenomenon in this time. This box will be transported many miles across the skies from OFW abroad to his beloved family back home.

Surely, the content of this box will bring big smiles and cheers to the keen receiver who had waited sooooooo….. much for this thing to arrive. This may be sent because of the OFW wife birthday presents, anniversary gifts, or just the manifestation or expression of his enduring love to his son or daughter who were consistent to call about their wishes and populating his email inbox with precise detail pictures of what they really want.

Most of the list items that the OFW Engineer painstakingly fill inside the box are the common stuff like toys, clothings, rubber shoes, perfumes, chocolates, electronic items, kitchen wares, books, hardware tools etc.. Items like these are really a lot cheaper here compare to buying at home. Plus, OFWs find some stuff that is hard to find elsewhere. It takes a lot of skills to organize this stuff inside the box considering every space as much as possible to maximize the freight cost. Here in KSA, the average cost of freight to the Philippines is SR 6 to SR 7 per kg, depending on your location ( Manila or Province ).

When this box finally arrives in the Philippines it shall be the center of attraction among the family members. Probably, meals may be skipped, television may be shut off, cell phone calls and text message may be ignored, to make sure they will not miss anything from the opening ceremony. If only you can install a spy audio transmitter, you can eavesdrop the various voices...... saying:

“ Ang dami naman tape….. hirap buksan, akin na gunting “

“ Ayun nakita ko na yung akin. Yung kulay orange na may check!! “

“ Tsarannnnn! Wow! ganda kasyang kasya….”

“ Eh, Asan na yung akin ay.........”

“ Sandali, mayroon pa sa ilalim…. “

“ Sarap netong chocolate, ang tatak sulat parang bulate ??? “

“ Gusto ko ito , tamang tama pang exercise ko… “

“ Yehey!, gagamitin ko na yang bagong bag ko sa school bukas ano…."

“ Oy, yung chocolates bigyan mo mga classmates mo ah…

“ May alak ba dyan? Walaaa, bawal dun yun.

“ Tawag nyo na Daddy nyo. thank you na kayo….”

Seeing them happier and full of joy is more than enough for the OFW Engineer to compensate his love for his family.   It is not that he makes them become spoiled brat or something, that make them love the box more than the sender of the box. It is only his way of mirroring his image to show that say " hey, I am still here, I am still around, I may be far away, but I am looking after you all the time and I will always love you whatever it takes..." So sweet so cool!...

He wanted them to know that the box is just the symbol of his unconditional love for them. That whatever the contents are, it is his way of giving back the love to his family for praying for him in his work, staying faithful, studying well and doing good all the time.

The next time you see this kind of box somewhere, paused for a minute and utter blessing and prayer to the sender. Wherever he is right now, he will always be blessed. That he may always be in good health and still succumbs to his previous deepest reason why he chose to be an OFW.   That he will not seek a second, a third or fourth family. That he will stick to his first one and only family who truly deserved to receive the OFW Engineer's Greatest Love of All....

ESCAPE THE HEAT!!!

Here in the Middle East, life is not just work and work harder. We were also given the opportunity to take a break, actually a 5 day long break. Thanks to Eid Mubarak Holiday. Our team of engineers took this chance to go to khobar beach for that most needed respite from the four corners of our office.

3 Days 2 Nights Trip to Khobar

It was a long 5 hours drive to Khobar from Riyadh. In the stretch of the road, looking at your left and right window was just a plain, infinite, dark orange desert sand. We saw a big number of self supporting camels scattered like a buffalo. I don't know if they are wild or being taken cared of by somebody. And, I wonder how they survive the scorching heat of the sun!

Even inside the coaster, obviously' as we are all very excited to reach our destination, we already started to have some fun. Typical pinoy stuff for men like singing, role playing, fun stories, picture takings and sleeping were among the antidotes to ignore the agony of prolonged sitting position.

On average, we were able to utilize 4 stop overs for gas refilling, chai or latte drinking and emptying our gall bladders. We noticed that a lot of our kababayans were heading to the same destination like ours. Just an indication, that even outside of our country, pinoys can always find ways to have some fun.

When it became visible to us the panoramic view of the Khobar beach coastlines, our sleepy mode suddenly switched to high energy chanting mode of excitement. Each like saying, Alright! This is it! I wanna plunge my tired ass in that salt water... It was not that beautiful like our Boracay beach, but just enough to cool down our physical engines.

Ever wonder why food taste great in the Beach? Because soaking your body to salt water and burning calories from swimming, running, walking and laughing will fine tuned your mouth to crave for that sizzling barbecue, grilled meat, pancit, fish sinigang, bulalo, water melons and sodas.

After our daytime fun in the beach, we proceeded to the khobar city proper for mall tour and scout for some bargain shopping. They've got many sales offer this time from 50% to 70% perhaps mainly because of the Eid holiday season. I was able to buy some beach sandals, shorts and shirts at a very low price.

We checked in to our hotel in the center downtown of Khobar to relax a bit after a day of escapade. Our hotel room was not that classy, but just enough to get shower, cook and sleep. The service was superb and unbelievable! They booked two clients in one rooom?. Arrghh! Anyway, we got our room after hustling with the receptionist.

Going to Khobar without visiting the beautiful corniche area near the coast lines can be a missed opportunity. In the morning sunrise, the park was really clean, beautiful and quiet. It is ideal for a morning walk, jog or just to meditate. With a nice landscape, lagoon matched with fountains, popular restaurants nearby, and some decorative external lightings, I think it would be much better viewing this area at night.

Did you know that the country of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia is just separated by a bridge? It is known as the King Fahd Causeway. The bridge is composed of four lane road, 25 km long and approximately 23 m wide according to Wikipedia. We enjoyed the view which is breathtaking when traversing the long bridge in the middle of a sparkling blue water. It is indeed, no doubt... a wonderful masterpiece of Engineering Ingenuity!

We spend our last night mostly in the beach. The sea water was calm and warm which was really ideal for relaxing while floating, watching the glittering star light in the sky and just simply lying down there in the soft sand.

It was really a satisfying trip for all of us. Our batteries are all fully charge again for going back to work. Hopefully in the next Eid, we will be having another day out. For sure, pinoy engineers are always looking forward to a lot of fun after a back breaking work. It served as a reward to our sacrifices, hardwork and patience while working here in the middle east.

SHARPENING YOUR SAW

The Myth that you should know everything just because you are an Engineer is False! Yeah, you heard me right. In fact, if you assumed you know everything under the sun in your field of endeavor, you are now then doomed to failure. Let’s face it, in the course of our work, you will encounter new process, ideas, solutions, technology and systems you haven't seen before And, this can be very hard to grasp everything if you do not leave yourself a room for improvement, more so of adapting to constant changes brought by new trends in the workplace.

Related to this, let me tell you the anecdote of Two Carpenters in a race against each other to cut the two identical logs:

“ The First Carpenter starts cutting the log using his saw hurriedly as if there is not much time left. He pauses only for a while to catch his breath and continue the back and forth motion of his saw. He does not mind if the saw is still in good shape, he just keep on moving the saw.

The Second Carpenter on the other hand, does the thing differently. In relax and calm manner, he positions the sharp teeth of his saw in the precise perpendicular to the log circumference with consistent, slow back and forth motion. He just paused for a moment to sharpen his saw, oil a bit and continue cutting the log. After quite some time, it begins to notice a huge difference of progress between the two. The First Carpenter now lags behind the Second Carpenter in terms of the cut portion. To think that the Second Carpenter whistles while stopping many times than the First Carpenter seems like cool and amazing to imagine. Worse, the First Carpenter is sweaty and exhausted like hell. Guess who win the race? Believe it or Not, it is the Smart and Cool Second Carpenter! “

What is the lesson behind the story?

You should use razor sharp saw in cutting logs! Literally that is the key. In time, your saw will become blunt or rusted if not given the deserved maintenance. In our life or career as an engineer, you should sharpen your saw. In order to be a world class engineer in your own field, you should be constantly updated of the changes in the industry and the work place without neglecting the fundamentals. Most of the time, the basics is the foundation of the many complex solutions to the engineering problems. We tend to forget the fundamentals because of the fascinating software to automate the job. The Non Engineers will key-in the data, hit the enter key, print the information and submit the report. The Engineers, on the other hand will evaluate the data, key-in the data, hit the enter key, scrutinize the output, check the equation, do manual calculation, if the software is wrong, he will call the programmer to debug the software. Now, that indeed really separates the Man from the boys. Do you agree?

How do you sharpen your saw as an Engineer?

a.) Review fundamentals or back to the basics.

b.) Attend Seminars and Trainings.

c.) Mingle with the same mindset engineers.

d.) Involve yourself to any challenging projects.

e.) Love to read books.

f.) Be a member and participate to any Engineering Organization.

The next time you encounter an Engineer or colleague displays anyone as shown:

That he does not need the trainings anymore because he knows everything.
That he sees asking question makes you stupid.
That he is busy doing the same work for a long time.
That he sees reading self help books, manuals, procedures as a sign of weakness.
That he argues it cannot be done rather than it can be done.
That he does not listen to you talking, instead he is busy thinking for his response.
That he brags all of his completed projects without anyone asking.
That he believes his long experience is enough for him to know everything.
That he has done the same thing and why you should make a change now.
That he hates the Engineers sooooo much….because he failed to graduate. Really sucks man!..

With this, you know very well you are talking to the First Carpenter of the story. What you can do is, to disappear in a flash immediately like a bubble. Treat him like a person with a transferable disease, waiting for you to become infected with his own ideologies.

You know that we are now in the Information Age. That who has the knowledge has the power. The beauty of today is that information is within our reach for everyone to digest. You just have to open your mind and accept new ideas as you go along in your career. The Engineers of the future are not anymore those who have graduated and registered. They are also the Registered Engineers who are willing to learn more, unlearn and relearn.

OFW Engineer Can't Jump?

We know that most Pinoy Engineers love basketball, and I am one of them. When my colleagues scheduled a fun game of basketball after work, I got excited. Its quite a long time that I have not played the game. The same excitement with my colleagues where most of them are already in their mid 30s to 40s, including me of course!

Do you think we still have the ability To dribble the ball? To jump high for the rebound? To give the smooth assist? To drive the hook? To block the opponents ball? To give a pick? To give zone defence? To get a fastbreak? To make a fed away jump shot? To do shoulder fake cross dribbling? To follow up shoot. To make 3 points shot? To do short jump shot, To dunk the ball? To walk in the air?

What do you think? Yeah, we still have the spirit to play the game. We want to make those barreling moves the way it is picture in our mind but those damn knees could not cooperate anymore as plan. The mind is willing but the body is weak. I think we need some compressor to drive enough air to breath more. We learned the need to respect biology now. Over-all, the game was great! We look forward to play more games except if it is sand storm.

Are you Designing your LIFE?

Design

In my work as an OFW Engineer, I used to design electrical distribution system, equipment layout, lighting system, control system, power system, fire alarm system, grounding, lightning protection system....and even the house of my DOG!

Oftentimes, I felt great when I saw my work issued for construction, come to life and just worked perfectly fine. Sometimes, my design will require some modifications, adjustments and some revisions to suit actual field condition or, as per client suggestions beyond my control. That is fine with me. I accepted the fact that in this industry, constant changes are normal. We deal it systematically that it becomes standard in our job to adapt and create another option or solution.

Sleepless Night

ANALYZE THIS

In one of my sleepless night, I wonder if I could adopt this principle in designing my own LIFE.   I believe I am the Engineer of my own Destiny.    Have you ever thought that too? Have you got a master plan in place to retire the way you want to? Did you ask yourself about your own target finish date of being an OFW? Are you following your own Plan? Do you allow revision to your Life ? Did you consider contingencies and safety factor in your life design? Are you taking calculated risk in your decision making? Are you doing something different from your colleagues in your own spare time? Did you start and finish something?

The problem of not doing anything is that you never know when are you going to finish. According to my friend Albert Einstein, " Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different result. " You can be whatever you are Tomorrow because of what you have done Today. You are stuck to what you are Now because of what you did Yesterday. Today is a gift for you that you can draft your plan and change the course of your destiny for the better.   There is no more permanent things in this world except change. Do not dwell anymore in the past that you can do no more. Neither you dwell too much in the future that you forget to live. Smell the scent of roses along the way, appreciate the beauty of the surroundings and enjoy the tweets of birds in the trees.

PICTURE THIS

So, grab your pen, scribble something to your paper to whatever comes to your thought.
While looking at your paper, you BEGIN your design with the END in mind.   You imagine the following vivid pictures start to appear gradually one at a time like in the movies.

You are in the balcony of your house in the beautiful sunrise, sitting in your lazy chair, drinking brewed coffee with newspaper in hand, while your wife serving your favorite breakfast and your kids are playing in your manicured lawn.

You are generating multiple passive income, that you can do things you love most and at the same time helping others in your own capacity.

You go visit places like beaches, mountains, resorts, etc you have never gone before for longer period of time with your family and friends.

You go overseas frequently not anymore as an OFW Engineer but as a tourist, businessman or investor.

You wake up in the morning with the same woman in your side and giving her the tickling hug to assure her that you'll gonna stick to the same bed forever!

You pursue other hobbies and undertakings like photography, painting, yoga, gardening, aikido, judo, scuba diving. sky diving, mountain climbing, motor biking, cycling and even participating in triathlon.

You attend reunions with your old time friends and classmates and they are amazed that you are still the guy next door and high school heart rob you used to be!

You will have more time with your relatives and old folks exchanging pleasantries, giving them your hugs and affections, rekindle the memories, giving gifts, laughing out loud and laugh for more...

You participate actively in other socio civic organizations in your own locality. You are asked to run for Mayor but politely decline because you want to run for Congress!

You visit banks and go straight to the bank's manager to consolidate your growing account portfolio.

You drive your own shinning SUV to visit your businesses, associates and farmville together with your loyal assistant and body guard... German Shepperd Dog K9.

You are the favorite sponsor for weddings, fiestas and other local celebrations.

You play basketball with your teen son and very proud to say " You are Cool Dad!

You are drinking your favorite frappucino in the coffee shop when you are noticed by a passing former colleague. Surprise to see you again, now in his vanishing hair , he asked you in his garbled voice, " What the hell are you doing here? Why are you so fit and look younger? What did you do these past years? Where are you now working? What Country? What is your offered salary?.... You are overwhelmed, confused and you do not know what question you will answer first. You smile and just say you are officially retire as an OFW. You just make a brief talk because he is about to catch up a plane going back to his work abroad. You notice, as he carry those luggage in hand, he is dragging his feet as if the shoes are quite that heavy. As you bade goodbye and good luck to him, you notice he wants to hide those teary eye. You know how that feels. It sucks! man.

Wow! Isn't that amazing? Those are the future outcome of your design. It is basically a simple life crafted from your meticulous preparation, enduring sacrifice, patience, hardwork and resourcefulness. There is no cost for dreaming the kind of life you want to be. It is unlimited my friend! It will depend on your design and your plan of action. If you fail to plan, you just go with time instead of grow with time. In that case, time will plan for you. And I am sure, you will not like it. You will blame the government, the church, the president, the priest, your employer, your parents, your friends, your family and your best friend. But you forgot to blame the most important person... yourself! You will realize you were trained so much to create so many excuses rather than solutions. Of course, you will be encountering problems, set backs, and challenges along the way. But just like the way engineers work, you just have to evaluate, calculate and rework again. If you cannot figure out yet the solutions to your problems, no problem. Just Google it!

So, when are you going to start your design??? Tomorrow, Next week, Next Month, Next Year.... NO! START Now! Time is short to spend to things not related to your design.
